"Do not remove the ancient landmark
Which your fathers have set."
(Prov. 22:28)
I revisited a place that I frequented as a child. The building was still standing, and the sign was still there. I told my son of a time much different from today—when there were no bars and rentals along the "marsh." My sister recently informed me that she often wanted to escape high-rises and the beach area development where our father's condo stood, so she would beg our father to take us out to eat at Oliver's in Murrell's Inlet. Nature was the surroundings of this old restaurant, and people came from miles around for the extraordinary seafood and the tranquil surroundings. The building, erected in 1910, remains dilapidated, and the yard is now small. Only the sign remains to remind newcomers that there was once a grand place by the water, but the area is now inundated with young partiers, noise, and much commercial activity. Yesterday's quaint old iconic restaurant has evolved into a distant memory of our childhood that we will cherish forever and that can't be taken away by "progress" and new ideas of what should be.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for our memories and those we share them with. Please help us enjoy our good memories and make new good memories often.
In Jesus name, Amen
